Washington State & Backflow Prevention

Washington State requires backflow prevention for irrigation systems to protect public health and ensure the safety of the public water supply.

This regulation serves multiple purposes:

  • Ensure Public Safety: Prevents contaminated water from entering the public water system.

  • Comply with Laws: Meets state and local health regulations.

  • Protect Health: Guards against harmful substances like pesticides, chemicals, and bacteria in drinking water.

  • Maintain Water System Integrity: Keeps backflow prevention devices functioning properly.

  • Reduce Liability: Helps with insurance compliance and minimizes liability risks.

These regulations are crucial for preventing contamination incidents and ensuring safe drinking water for all residents. For more detailed information, you can refer to the Washington State Department of Health's Cross-Connection Control and Backflow Prevention page and the specific WAC 246-290-490.
